Pietraviva is perched on a hill only a few kilometres from Ambra, Bucine and Siena. It seems that the little centre, which stood on the opposite hill, was destroyed at the end of the 13th century and rebuilt in the present location for a better defence. The remaining castle walls in the fortress, which are still visible, today built the wall for some accommodations. The medieval church Santa Lucia was completely rebuilt in 1580. The parsonage, on the right side of the church, is from the 16th century.
The medieval character of Pietraviva did not change at all. The only difference is that nowadays you can have a cappuccino in the bar right before go up into the historic centre. Even on Sundays you’ll find the little “Bottega” (small grocer’s shop) open next door. For daily shopping you can drive also to Ambra where you can find not only all the amenities you might need but also a nice market every Tuesday.
